SGEL focuses on Multiphysics processes occurring in Geomaterials with relevance to sustainable development of ground engineering. Our approach entails a combination of non-destructive imaging techniques (i.e., X-ray CT, microfluidics, NMR) and multi-scale modelling (i.e., DEM, FEM, CFDEM).
Our current research contributes to the following engineering applications:
Offshore energy: Optimising seabed anchors for floating wind platforms
Geothermal energy: Extracting sustainable heat from shallow subsurface
Gas storage:Understanding processes for safe underground gas storage
Ground improvement: Enhancing soil/rock properties via bio-mediated methods for climate resilience
